The Beginnings of Mammoth Cannabis

But where to start this endeavor? The Santillo family already had a foothold near the Old First Ward community and Downtown Buffalo with their family trucking business that has operated in the area since the 1970s. With space becoming available at the 212 Ohio Street location, they decided it would be a good place to set up a dispensary. Close to historic neighborhoods, within walking distance of a multitude of entertainment and events, and part of an area that has seen development in recent years, converting empty industrial spaces into places for people to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

The only question was, what do we call it? Two owners, Justin Smith and Mike Santillo are local musicians that have been involved in the Buffalo music scene for over 15 years. In 2016, they began operating Mammoth Recording Studio. As the whole group toyed around with different names, the idea was brought up to expand on the already established name of Mammoth. The dispensary would be located in the same building as the Recording Studio, and because music and cannabis go hand in hand, they went ahead with the name Mammoth Cannabis.

Opening Our Dispensary

Mammoth Cannabis applied for a license in the Fall of 2023. Many months went by, and finally in the Summer of 2024, they received the news that they had been approved to operate a cannabis dispensary. Though the Santillos had operated in this space for the past 50 years, the building has history that goes back even further. Mammoth Cannabis is located in a building considered to be Buffalo’s oldest railroad structure. Built sometime in the early 1800s, this building first opened up in 1843 as the Attica and Buffalo Railroad, becoming the final link in the chain of connected railroads stretching across New York State from Buffalo to Albany.
